How solar street lighting works

A solar street light is a self-contained power system on a pole. It generates, stores and uses its own energy every 24 hours, independent of the grid — which is why it keeps working through load shedding and where no grid supply exists.

    Daytime

    Solar panel charges the battery

    Sunlight on the panel produces DC power. The charge controller regulates it and charges the lithium battery while the light stays off.

    Dusk

    Automatic switch-on

    When panel voltage falls at sunset, the controller detects darkness and switches the LED light on — no grid connection or timer wiring needed.

    Night

    Battery powers the LED

    The battery supplies the LED through the night. Programmed dimming — or motion-based brightness where specified — reduces energy use during low-traffic hours.

    Dawn

    Switch-off and recharge

    At sunrise the controller turns the light off and the charging cycle begins again. Battery reserve is sized to carry the light through cloudy days.

Solar panels

Photovoltaic modules convert daylight into DC electricity. Panel wattage and tilt are chosen from the site's solar conditions and the daily energy the light needs, with margin for dust, heat and shorter winter days.

Solar-powered LED street lights

LED luminaires deliver the required illumination at low wattage. LED power, optics and mounting height are matched to the road width, pole spacing and the lighting level the site requires.

Lithium & LiFePO4 batteries

The battery stores daytime solar energy for night operation. AmpereX specifies lithium chemistry, and LiFePO4 where appropriate, for its cycle life, stable voltage and suitability for daily charge–discharge.

Battery enclosures

Pole-mounted, integrated or ground-level enclosures protect the battery from rain, dust, direct sun and tampering. Enclosure design considers ventilation and heat, which strongly affect battery life in Pakistan's summers.

Solar charge controllers

The controller manages charging from the panel, protects the battery from overcharge and deep discharge, and switches the light on at dusk and off at dawn. Dimming schedules can be programmed to extend autonomy.

Wiring & protection

Correctly rated cabling, fusing, connectors and surge protection keep the system safe and reliable, and make fault-finding straightforward during maintenance.

The battery determines whether a solar street light still works after several years and through a run of cloudy days. Why lithium for street lighting

A street light cycles its battery every night. Lithium chemistry — and LiFePO4 in particular — is well suited to this daily charge–discharge pattern, with a longer cycle life and more usable capacity than lead-acid.

Heat and placement

High summer temperatures shorten the life of any battery. Enclosure location, shading and ventilation are part of the design, not an afterthought.

Battery management

Lithium packs are paired with protection — through an integrated BMS and a compatible charge controller — against overcharge, over-discharge, over-current and short circuit.

Matched to the controller

Charging voltages and cut-off points are configured for the chosen chemistry, so the controller and battery work as one system rather than as separate parts.

There is no single correct solar street light specification. Each system is engineered from the factors below.
